Friday's Methodology: PBMC

There have been a lot of data lately concerning HIV and HCV/HBV virus clinical trials. They often refer to PBMC isolation and in vitro/ in vivo [in the test tube/ in the body] study results. What the hell are PBMC anyway?

Well, PBMC is an acronym for peripheral blood mononuclear cells. These are the immune cells that are always in your blood. They get activated by such means as TLR ligands. One can easily isolate PBMC by using a centrifuge and a gradient such as a synthetic sugar such as Percoll or Ficoll, where you put the cells on top of the sugar and spin it until the cells reach a density in the sugar that matches their own.
